Dresden Germany

Laura spent a long time trying to convince me that a four and a half hour train trip (nine hours total) to Dresden is totally worth it. I told her it must be the most beautiful city in all of Germany to travel that far. Turns out the reason for taking a day trip to Dresden was to meet up with Jiri who had surprised me by coming to Germany for my birthday. Walking out of the train I was petrified when he came up behind us.

The train ride to Dresden was rather long and uneventful. Except for the train with the large family that played annoying children songs including a German version of YMCA. We had a fifty-minute stopover in Leipzig and went for the world’s quickest city tour. We surprised Laura’s friend Hanne at work for two minutes before getting on our next train.

Once we arrived in Dresden and met up with Jiri we started touring around the city. The contrast between Dresden and Erfurt is huge. Dresden is filled with large gothic grey buildings, whereas Erfurt has smaller pastel coloured ones. Dresden was almost completely bombed in the past so the buildings that are there now are just reconstructions of the old ones.

We met up with Laura’s friend Marie and continued to walk through the city. We stopped at the river, and then crossed the bridge to the student area to find some food for lunch. Not long after we had to head back to the train station for the four and a half hour train back to Erfurt. Around 23:30 our train had to stop for construction so we didn’t arrive home until after midnight. A very interesting city but we decided next time its probably better to go somewhere a bit closer to home.
