On our second day in Vienna I woke up when Mishaela was
about to leave the room. She had snuck around getting ready and was going to
get us breakfast. A while later she returned with fruit danish’s and hot
chocolate. What a great morning of breakfast in bed in a nice hotel! We got
ready slowly and planned out our day (with a few suggestions from Laura). Our
first stop was the Sigmund Freud Museum. Being psych majors this stop seemed
necessary. We decided to walk for the whole day to see more of the city and
save some money on bus fare. We walked for a half hour through the city, and
saw many beautiful buildings and statues along the way.
The museum was smaller than we expected but still did not
disappoint. The building was previously the home and workplace of Freud before
he was forced to leave Vienna. Sadly he took his famous couch with him, but we
still saw the original waiting room (with all the same furniture). The other
rooms were filled with letters, photos, and information about his life. Turns
out Freud was an avid traveller as well, and even visited Niagara Falls! After
wards we had lunch at the Freud Café next to the museum. The food may not have
been amazing but it was still a funny experience to eat there.
Our second stop was the Viennese Prater, a large theme park
within Vienna. Mishaela’s (improving) navigation and map reading skills got us
there eventually. We were told that it’s a must to ride the “big wheel” a very
old, and very large Ferris wheel within the park. So we paid our nine euros
each and boarded the rickety old ride. People didn’t seem to understand that
our weight should be distributed evenly so the car didn’t tip, which made us a
little uneasy.
Afterwards we walked around the theme park. We found
another, smaller, Ferris wheel that went a bit faster than the previous
one. At only 3.50 (which seemed cheap in
comparison to the last ride) we felt we should take it.
We took the long walk back to the hotel around 6pm. We
dressed up in our only fancy outfits we had packed and decided to go out for a
nice dinner. Online it told us that our hotel’s restaurant was booked until September
(something that didn’t seem to be the actual case), so we went in search of
somewhere else to eat. We ate at the Bristol Bar hotel. The food was amazing,
and we were given complementary chocolates (bonus!). Thanks to Mishaela’s mom
for treating us! After dinner we headed
back to our hotel to have a slice of the famous Sacher chocolate torte at the café.
