Berlin Germany Day 3

On our last day in Berlin we had quite a bit to see and do. Matt had given us a list of suggestions the evening before so we had plenty of ideas. We started the day by finding the Berlin Wall Memorial, which turned out to be no more than a small section of the wall. Feeling hungry from having skipped breakfast we found a nice café nearby. After we had eaten we were determined to find the East Side Gallery, which is the longest remaining section of the wall (1.3km). The wall has many murals painted on it by artists from around the world. On our way to the gallery we passed Museum Island, an area with 5 large museums.

When we arrived at the gallery we walked along the length of the wall, and stopped for a rest on the river at the end. Afterwards we made our way to Street food Thursday at Markthalle 9. Matt gave us a tip about this small market that sells a variety of ethnic foods on Thursday evenings. We arrived a half hour early so we sat and waited while they built up the stalls around us. We wandered around the market several times before deciding to try some Japanese curry and a thai wrap.

When we finished eating we headed back to the area we found the day before that was set up for the Germany vs. USA world cup game. On our way we saw many restaurants packed with people all pointed towards the T.V. Being in Europe during the world cup has been interesting, especially when the Netherlands was winning! At some point a large rainstorm came down us while walking to the event. So we stood soaking wet under an overhang, sadly the rain didn't stop for quite a while.

When we arrived we found masses of soaking wet crowds streaming away from the event screaming Deutschland! Turns out the event had been rained out and everyone had to leave early. Policemen had blocked off the whole section of the street that had held the festival. At first we were disappointed but then we just became focused on getting home as fast as possible and beating the crowds.

Getting home proved troublesome, as all of the subway stations nearby had been closed off. We followed the stream of people to the next open station (the largest one we had seen yet) and pushed our way onto a train. Eventually we made it home after riding amongst the drunk and screaming fans for a half hour.
