Velkommen to our Danish adventures! I’m Mishaela, the latest
travel buddy with Janine! Let me take you through the first couple action
packed days…
To start off our trip, we first had our lovely reunion at
the airport. I hadn’t seen my newly converted Dutch friend in forever. After a
long flight from Vancouver, I met the Niners at the Amsterdam Airport. From
there, we hopped right onto another plane to begin our excursion in Copenhagen.
Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Amsterdam, we arrived at our destination! Immediately when we got off the plane, we were greeted by the crazy Danish weather. We were blasted with rain, and Janine got drenched because she had no hood!
Soggy for a short time, we continued onto our Air BNB chosen place. A bit tricky at first, we finally figured out how to get there after asking some locals. Danish people have proven to be very helpful!
The place we are staying at is cozy, and the family is nice.
Nothing lavish, but a good place to rest our heads at the end of the day.
Located outside Copenhagen, in the area of Bronshoj-Husum, it takes about 30
minutes to the city centre by bus.
Once we dropped off our stuff, we quickly began the hunt for
food. Both starving, we asked our hosts about where to go. They recommended in
searching the area of Norreport. By mistake though, we ended up in Norreboro.
Whoops! Slightly less upscale…
However, we did find a yummy place called Café Castro. This is where discovered the crazy prices here! Our burgers were 100 DKK, which is close to $20 CAD. Hungry, and defeated, we gobbled up our plates very fast, and tried to ignore the cost.
When we finished dinner, we were both exhausted, and began
making our way back home. My idea, since we didn’t have any change for the bus,
was to walk our way to the place we were staying at. Silly, yet with the most
honest intentions, Janine and I trekked back without realizing how far our
place really was. Turns out, it was close to an hour and a half walk. Those
burgers were definitely worked off in no time! This combined with all the
travel made for a good night’s sleep.
The next day, we decided to become true tacky tourists. Originally, we had looked up what to do online in Copenhagen, and we decided to explore Fredericksborg Castle. It looked far, so when we got to the Metro line in the city, we asked for directions, and advice on how to get there. The train attendants told us “no no, you don’t need to go that way” (the way Google maps advised us), and instead pointed us in the direction of “Fredericksberg” station. So, we listened, and our day took an unexpected turn. Good thing we stopped at this cute market before boarding our Metro, otherwise we would have been famished!
We ended up at “Fredericksberg Castle”, and not
“Fredericksborg Castle”. It was a funny coincidence in the similar names, so we
made the best of it and explored around that area. Luckily for us, we were hard
pressed to find an area that wasn’t gorgeous. We ate lunch outside the castle,
found a fun maze, posed with a creepy statue, and continued on our day.
Janine was eager to find Nyhavn, the picturesque fishing port and awesome dining area, in Copenhagen. We set out for this, but also had some setbacks. We aren’t the best with directions! On this mission, our funny encounter with some older German fellows distracted us.
We had asked two old Germans to take a picture of us, and they provided us laughs by saying:
German men: Where
are you from?
Us: Canada
German men: Ice
hockey? (Both turn to each other) Ice hockey??? (Slightly more excited) ICE
HOCKEY!!!!!
Us: Instantly
falling in love with the two men
After this adorable interaction, we high tailed in what we
thought was the direction of Nyhavn. Failing once again, we decided to take a
canal tour around Copenhagen to see all the sights.
The boat tour was an interesting experience. It was fun, but
the torrential downpours limited the overall experience. As Janine said “I had
trouble seeing through my poncho,” but there was still a bit of sunny breaks so
we were glad we did it. On the tour, we saw the famous Little Mermaid...although
there wasn’t much to see because she’s teeny in real life!
Finally we reached our destination of Nyhavn! It was just as beautiful as imagined! Restaurants for days, and unique scenery, we caved into the temptation of having dinner there. We decided on a pizzeria called “Sunny Side,” mainly for the cost factor. After all, we are stingy students.
The pizza was yummy, and huge! We gobbled up what we could, and took the rest to go. Our waiter was less than thrilled with this packing up food concept, but heck, it’s half a pizza!!!
After our big day of sightseeing, we headed back to our
room. To finish off our day, we watched the remainder of the girly movie
“Crossroads,” and then went right to bed. What a great day in Copenhagen!
Come back soon for more escapades,
Janine & Mishaela
